Program Overview

The Conference program will review the changing world of asthma in our nation.  We aim to work together to develop ideas and actions which can influence and inform future asthma agendas.

The program will seek to involve a wide cross section of people connected with asthma -consumers, health professionals, scientists and researchers, policy makers from State and Federal Governments and Asthma Foundations of Australia staff.

Presentations will be given on a range of topics including; Air Quality and Asthma, New and Future Research, New Technologies and Asthma, Health Policy and Asthma and Clinical Skills for Health Professionals.

Call For Abstracts

The Australian Asthma Conference Programs Committee invites the submission of abstracts on original work for oral or poster presentation that meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Provide new understandings about people with asthma and their journey with asthma
  • Provide new understandings about the science of asthma
  • Provide new understandings about asthma management and improving health outcomes for individuals
  • Inform about the Australian landscape of tomorrow and its implications for asthma and the way it is managed:
    • Future demographic and societal trends
    • Future political/policy environment
    • Future physical environment
  • Provide insights into future opportunities for the Australian asthma community to work collaboratively to advance asthma


Priority will be given to submissions that cover:

  • Innovative use of information technologies
  • Indigenous health
  • Rural health
  • The perspectives of people with asthma and allergy
  • Air quality / climate change
  • The benefit of partnerships

All abstract submissions will be reviewed against their ability to meet the items outlined in the above criteria.

All accepted abstracts will be published in the Conference program distributed to all Conference delegates and posted on the Conference website post Conference.

Presenting authors must be registrants at the Conference.  All abstracts must be submitted online via the online submission form below. Please note that abstract submissions must be received by 16 July 2008.

General Policies and Requirements for the Submission of Abstracts

  • Abstracts may be submitted for either oral or poster presentation.
  • All abstracts must contain original work that has not previously been reported.
  • The presenting author will be required to register and pay for the Conference to ensure their abstract(s) are included in the final program. Deadline for presenting author registration is 12 September 2008.
  • All abstracts must be prepared according to the guidelines provided. It is the responsibility of all authors to ensure their abstract is submitted in the correct format for inclusion in the program. Abstracts will be published in the form submitted by the author. Please read all instructions carefully before preparing your abstract.
  • Abstract will not be accepted via fax, email or on CD.
  • All abstracts are to be submitted online. If you are unable to submit via the website or are experiencing difficulties please contact the Conference Managers.
  • Abstracts must be submitted by the presenting author who should complete all fields on the online submission form.
  • The purpose of the abstract is to define the precise subject of the presentation to an audience.
  • Please print a copy of the abstract submission form for your records prior to clicking the submit button.

Abstract Format Guidelines

Title
The abstract title should be short, informative and contain the major key words. It should be in Title Case, Arial, Bold, 12 pt size, and left justified.

Authors
Abstract Titles should be followed by authors’ first initial and last name (with the presenting author in bold). Superscript numbers must be used to indicate the author’s institution, followed by city and state (in this order). Do not include degrees or professional titles (e.g. Dr, Prof., etc).

Abstract text

  • Abstract text must be in Arial, 10pt size, single-spaced and justified.
  • Abstracts are to be a maximum of 300 words, including references.
  • There is to be a maximum of 2 references.
  • Abstracts are to be formatted under one of the following heading formats:
    • Introduction, Methods, Results and Conclusion, or
    • Introduction, Discussion and Conclusion
  • Diagrams and tables can be included in the abstracts.
  • Use standard abbreviations only. Within the body of the abstract, when using abbreviations spell out the name in full at the first mention and follow with the abbreviation in parenthesis. Abbreviations may be used in the title, provided the name in full is outlined in the body of the abstract.
  • Capitalise the first letter of trade names.


Compliance to the specifications is imperative - any abstract that does not comply with these specifications will not be accepted for review.

Oral Presentations: Audiovisual Equipment

Please note that for all oral presentations only Data Projection (Power Point) will be available for use by speakers.

Poster Presentations

Poster presentations will be displayed within the Exhibition area of the Conference.

For those selected to present their abstract in a Poster format, it is expected that one of the presenting authors be present at their poster during poster viewing opportunities.

Instructions on the preparation of poster displays will be sent to authors upon notification of the abstract’s acceptance.
